The Significance of the Lausanne Treaty: International Dimensions

The Great Hall, King’s College, The Strand – 04 Nov 2023

This year is the 100th year anniversary of the signing of the Lausanne Treaty agreement which formally ended hostilities between Greece and Turkey and led to the infamous population exchange between the two countries.

We joined forces with the Anglo-Hellenic League and the Centre for Hellenic Studies at King’s College London to present a joint event.
The programme started with the screening of the Venizelos, the Struggle for Asia Minor (2022, National Research Foundation “Eleftherios K. Venizelos”, ERT, EKOME) movie after a brief introduction and post-screening Q&A by Leonidas Liambeys and Helen Katsiadakis

Later on there were presentations by:
Helen Katsiadakis, “The Treaty of Lausanne: an overview”
Maria Fafalios, “Social and gender dimensions of the refugees’ conditions – Eyewitnessed accounts”
Ceyda Karamursel, “The Treaty of Lausanne as the Dawn of a New Economic Order”
and a panel discussion chaired by Bruce Clark who was also a discussant.

The evening ended with a reception much enjoyed by all the guests and participants.

With our especial thanks to the National Research Foundation “Eleftherios K. Venizelos” and the A.G. Leventis Foundation
